Rings and things

New work: Rings

I’ve been having a lot of fun making rings recently.  Most are one-off’s, as I have an idea and make it to ‘scratch the itch’.  Once it’s made, I’m happy.

But some I think I’ll be keeping in the range.  My last trip to Thailand in search of stones has yielded some interesting finds.  In the most part they are not the best stones one can buy.  Many have inclusions – especially the diamonds – and some have incipient fracture planes inside the stone.  The fracture planes won’t cause the stone to break, it just makes the stone different. Most of these differences apart from the diamonds you can’t see with the naked eye.

Of course, stones like these - especially the diamonds - are much less expensive, but I think they are also more interesting

The rough stone is by way of an experiment. I’m trying new designs and ways of using stones and these rough stones and larger cut stones are the first step on the way.  I’ll let you know when I’ve got something to show for it.

I’ve made several of these asymmetric rings with various precious and semi-precious stones. Diamonds, both yellow and white, along with sapphires, rubies, topaz and citrine among others.  I’ve also got some wonderful heat-treated orange sapphires just waiting to be made up.

I also make them with cubic zirconias (CZ’s) which are a synthetic stone which has a brilliance similar to top grade precious and semi-precious stones. You can either wait until you see us wherever we set up the stall next, or get one of these rings made up in your size with your choice of stone.
